Press-fit zones

Press-fit contacts from Diehl Metal Applications (DMA) create reliable, solderless connections between printed circuit boards (PCBs) and electromechanical components - engineered to meet the stringent requirements of the automotive industry. Our portfolio includes validated press-fit contacts that can be flexibly combined with customer-specific connector geometries.

From standard SPI pins with short lead times and no tooling investment to fully customized solutions, DMA press-fit technology provides a robust and efficient connection concept for automotive applications. Key benefits include solderless assembly, elimination of flux residues, minimized thermal impact on components, efficient and cost-effective assembly, double-sided PCB assembly capability, and improved recyclability by pressing out the pins.

DMA supports customers across the full development cycle — from application-specific consulting and product design to validated industrial-scale manufacturing.

Press-fit contacts with application-specific surface finishes

Depending on the requirements, special surfaces can be used for press-fit contacts in addition to standard surfaces. The DMA Advanced Surfaces from Diehl Metall have been specially developed for the requirements of press-fit technology and offer long-term reliability in demanding applications.

The available special surfaces include DMA Advanced Indium and DMA Advanced SilverTin (AgSn). The electroplatings offer excellent press-fit properties, high contact quality and a significantly reduced risk of whisker. As a lead-free alternative to SnPb, they are suitable for modern, future-proof applications.

The DMA Advanced Surfaces are mechanically robust, fully process-compatible in further processing and designed for high-temperature and high-current applications. They meet all relevant legal requirements, including the End-of-Life Vehicle Directive 2000/53/EC, and are suitable for all press-fit technology applications.

Maximum performance in minimum space: high-speed & high-frequency applications

In addition, our specially developed press-fit contacts enable a low protrusion on the underside of the PCB. This creates the conditions for minimum construction heights with maximum signal and contact quality - ideal for high-speed and high-frequency data transmission in space-critical electronic assemblies.

Typical application examples for press-fit contacts with special surfaces:

  • Control units (ECUs), e.g. for driver assistance systems, engine control or battery management
  • Radar and camera modules with high-frequency capable connections and minimal installation height
  • Power electronics for e-mobility, e.g. inverters and converters with high current carrying capacity
  • Telematics and communication modules with a high data rate and compact design
  • Industrial sensors and actuators for robust, vibration-resistant connections in harsh environments
  • Safety-critical systems such as whisker-sensitive airbag or brake systems
