short-range air defence (SHORAD)

Designed for the protection of troops, high-value-assets and self-defence applications, the combat-proven IRIS-T SLS provides a highly mobile Short-Range Air Defence (SHORAD) system for operation in dynamic threat environments. It delivers an effective intercept range of up to 12 km and altitude coverage up to 6 km, combining high direct-hit capability and outstanding thrust-vector control.

The system architecture combines a launcher module, integrated sensor suite and network-enabled command and control (C2). To achieve high firepower, the launcher can be  equipped with quad ammunition pods, each holding four guided missiles (= 8 guided missiles in total), featuring self-reload capability and stabilization for fire-on-the-move – supporting vertical or slanted launch configurations. The integrated sensor, including electro-optical sensors, enables target identification, missile guidance, data transmission and multi-sensor tracking. Through data exchange between sensors and effectors as well as voice communication within the platoon, the system supports coordinated engagements and flexible command and control. It can be operated in platoon, standalone, or fully integrated into national air defence networks with remote operation capability while being able to complement the IRIS-T SLM air defence system.

Modular System Design: Carrier Vehicle Independent

The IRIS-T SLS system is built on a carrier-vehicle-independent and modular system architecture, enabling flexible integration on a wide range of tracked or wheeled platforms. Based on a standardized 15-foot ISO container interface, the system can be rapidly integrated onto existing carrier vehicles, reducing integration effort and adapting the system to national and industrial requirements. The modular system design allows configuration as an all-in-one SHORAD solution or as additional launcher module, depending on operational needs. This architecture also enables the integration of additional sensors and effectors, including C-UAV capabilities or remote weapon stations, enhancing system performance, operational flexibility, and self-defence capabilities. By combining platform flexibility, modularity and future-ready interfaces, IRIS-T SLS provides a highly adaptable SHORAD system that can be tailored to specific mission requirements.

COMBAT-PROVEN WITH EXISTING MISSILE SYSTEM

The IRIS-T SLS system employs the unchanged IRIS-T air-to-air missile, enabling the use of existing missile stocks. The use of the identical missile design for air-to-air and ground-to-air operations represents a cost-effective way of leveraging existing inventories while simplifying logistics, training and lifecycle management. For maximum operational flexibility, the missile software is adapted during the loading process on the vehicle-independent launcher. Combined with a high degree of automation, the system enables autonomous operation, ensuring rapid (re-) deployment and reaction capabilities while maintaining a low troop requirement. By leveraging combat-proven interceptors and automated system operation, IRIS-T SLS delivers high operational efficiency with minimal integration effort and reduced personnel requirement.

WHY IRIS-T SLS?

  • Combat-proven system showing effectiveness in challenging operations
  • Provides 360° protection with high maneuverability with future fire-on-the-move capability
  • Modular, vehicle-independent architecture with standardized interfaces enables flexible integration on tracked or wheeled vehicles
  • High degree of automation allows autonomous operation, rapid reaction times and reduced troop requirement

IRIS-T SLS MK4

The highly mobile "all-in-one" solution

Modular design with future fire-on-the-move capability

IRIS‑T SLS MK4 is a further evolution of the combat-proven IRIS‑T SLS system. This highly mobile short-range air defence system is specifically designed to protect troops on the move and critical infrastructure from airborne threats.

This fourth generation of the IRIS-T SLS system has an effective range of 12 km and an altitude coverage of up to 6 km. The system combines radar, C2 system and launcher, including effectors, on one vehicle, making it a genuine "all-in-one" solution. Due to its high mobility and future fire-on-the-move capability, it enables extremely fast response times. Thanks to the compact design, the air defence system can be relocated in a very short time. The vehicle-independent design allows maximum flexibility for different customer demands.

Enhanced combat capability with unchanged IRIS-T air-to-air missiles

The SLS system is already fully integrated into the Diehl Defence concept of multi-layered air defence. The further development and upgrade to the MK4 version consistently meets NATO standards and operational requirements, including an increased payload capacity with an eightfold load and the associated increase in combat effectiveness. The IRIS-T missile is and remains the core element of ground-based air defence at Diehl Defence, even in the tried-and-tested SLS system. The integration of additional effectors, such as the C-UAV eMissile CICADA from Diehl Defence or a weapon station is also possible.

As an air defence system with future-proof capabilities, IRIS-T SLS MK4 stands for high performance in dynamic threat scenarios.
