Short-range and very short-range air defence system (the German LVS NNbS)

Diehl Defence GmbH & Co. KG, Hensoldt Sensors GmbH and Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH have joined forces in the joint venture ARGE NNbS to bid for Germany’s next-generation short and very short-range air defence system (LVS NNbS). The objective is to close the current gap to protect deployed ground forces, forward operating elements and critical infrastructure from low-altitude air threats.

The proposal leverages market-ready platforms and components, building on subsystems that are already in use by the Bundeswehr. A major pillar is the end-to-end logistical support of the NNbS from German suppliers, ensuring national resilience and minimal risk.

Their combined core strengths are: Diehl Defence’s missile development and production expertise; Hensoldt’s advanced radar technologies and proven field-tested products; and Rheinmetall’s electronics, vehicle integration and command-and-control experience. Together, the alliance delivers a solution that blends proven technology, rapid deployment and seamless integration for Germany’s upcoming close-air-defence capability.

The Role of Diehl Defence

Diehl Defence specializes in the design and manufacture of guided missiles. With its modern, combat-proven ground-based air defence system solutions, Diehl Defence has established a strong presence in the international market. The program employs the established IRIS-T SLS, the “small sibling” of the IRIS-T SLM interceptor in respect to the evolution of IRIS-T. This gives the system the ability to deliver extreme performance and reliability that can be trusted in operational use - combat-proven and ready to protect.
