Diehl Aerospace Joins Consortium that builds Asymmetric Response European System
Diehl Aerospace – a Joint Venture between Diehl Aviation and Thales – has joined the Asymmetric Response European System (ARES) – an industry initiative comprising Oramach, Airspan Networks, and iVent Mobile. The partners are developing an open, resilient communications architecture that combines satellite communications, air-to-ground networks and terrestrial mobile connectivity into a unified and interoperable ecosystem. The system is designed to support public safety and defense-related communications needs across Europe. It is fully sovereign and enabled by the 2 GHz frequency band, which the European Commission recently announced would be made available for such purposes.
As part of its contribution, Diehl Aerospace will provide its High Performance Controller (HPC) which will operate as a Communication Concentrator Unit (CCU). This highly integrated HPC-CCU platform is designed to serve as a central communications and computing hub onboard aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial systems. HPC-CCU enables the integration and management of multiple communication channels and technologies within a single unit. Combining advanced processing capabilities with communications management functions, the platform supports seamless connectivity between airborne platforms and terrestrial and satellite-based networks. Its modular architecture allows customers to integrate different communication technologies while providing flexibility and robustness required for mission planning and performance.
Designed for demanding aerospace applications, the HPC-CCU follows an optimized SWaP (Size, Weight and Power) approach, combining high computing performance with a compact footprint and low energy consumption. This makes it particularly well suited for next-generation airborne platforms requiring reliable, secure, and scalable connectivity.
"Reliable and resilient communications are becoming increasingly important for future public safety and defence airborne operations and digital mission environments," said Kai Burkhardt, Director Strategy at Diehl Aerospace. "With our HPC-CCU platform, we contribute a proven technology that intelligently connects different communication systems and supports the development of sovereign and interoperable communications capabilities in Europe."
For Diehl Aerospace, participation in the consortium further underscores the company's commitment to advancing digital aviation technologies and next-generation connectivity solutions. With decades of experience in developing and integrating mission-critical systems, the company continues to support the evolution of connected airborne platforms through innovative and future-oriented technologies.
